An axial expansion joint is a bellows expansion joint that provides axial compression or extension. It is mainly assembled from a bellows element and connecting fittings at both ends. The bellows is the core of the expansion joint because of its flexibility.

Axial expansion joints have the advantages of compact structure and low production cost. It is the simplest and most common structural type of bellows expansion joint, among which axial expansion joints with welded ends and axial expansion joints with flanges are the most typical.

In pipeline systems, axial expansion joints are used to compensate for pipeline displacement caused by thermal expansion and contraction or to isolate vibrations caused by the operation of various mechanical equipment. In some high-temperature or high-pressure application circumstances, axial expansion joints can perfectly replace rubber expansion joints, and their service life is longer.

According to the direction of compensation displacement, bellows expansion joints can also be divided into lateral expansion joints and angular expansion joints. For an understanding of the direction of movement of the bellows, please refer to the picture below.
