The V band clamp takes its name from its shape, as its cross-section resembles the letter V. For the convenience of reading and writing, it is often called a V clamp. V band clamps are used to join metal pipes and provide mechanical seals for a variety of piping systems.

V band clamp consists of V-shaped retainer, band, trunnion, T-bolt latch and nut. The V-shaped retainer and the band are connected by spot welding. The retainer helps secure the two paired V band flanges and seals them with a fastening mechanism. The number of retainers is not constant.
