Hinged Expansion Joint

The hinged expansion joint is assembled by bellows expansion joint and external hinges. Hinges are used to limit axial movement and to achieve angular rotation of a single plane. A hinge consists of two hinge plates. They are welded to both ends of the metal expansion joint and connected together by a pin. The hinge pin is located in the center of the length of the bellows and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the bellows.

The hinged expansion joint can withstand the full pressure thrust of the bellows. Because of the hinges it can also support the weight of adjacent piping and equipment, as well as some other external forces. To obtain limited axial movement, some hinge pin holes are designed to be slotted. These custom expansion joints will not be able to withstand pressure thrust, so anchors must be designed for them accordingly.

According to industry practice, hinged expansion joints are usually single hinged if not specified. A single hinged expansion joint consists of a single bellows expansion joint and two hinges.

Hinged expansion joints are often used in combination of two or three sets to absorb movement from one or more directions in a single plane.

The hinged expansion joint has single hinged type, double hinged type and gimbal type according to the function difference. The double hinged expansion joint is assembled from two single hinged expansion joints and an intermediate pipe. Compared with single hinged expansion joints, double hinged expansion joints can also compensate for a large amount of lateral movement. Gimbal expansion joint is more versatile, it can provide angular rotation in any plane.
